In the context of Africities 2000 African elected officials met to discuss the close relationships which exists between urban development, growth and public transport. The meeting was attended by hundred representatives from Africa, Canada, United States and Europe and chaired by Henry Chabert, MP, Deputy Mayor of Lyon (France) and President of INTA.

The rate of urbanisation in African cities, the foreseeable increase of the share of economic activities generated by cities, the need of mobility and accessibility to more urban services (health, education, finance, culture), all these factors will have a profound effect on the nature and level of transport demand in cities. This means that urban transport system must be well planned and more importantly well managed, capable of adapting to changing technologies and capable of exist in harmony with the natural environment.
