Mrs. Ann McAfee

Ann McAfee retired in June 2006 from the position of Co-Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver, Canada. During her thirty years in Vancouver, Ann managed the City’s Housing Programs and, from 1994 – 2006, was responsible for Vancouver’s award winning CityPlan, Community and City-Regional Planning, and Business Improvement Program. She co-managed Transportation, Industry, Financing Growth, and Sustainability Plans. In mid 2006 Ann established City Choices Consulting, a firm specializing in advice on strategic planning and public processes.
Since “retiring” Ann has advised cities in Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, China, Ukraine, and Sweden on governance and land use planning. She recently served as: Canadian Project Manager for an award winning study on Community Development in Shanghai; member of the Melbourne 2030 Expert Audit Panel; advisor to the Canadian government on Decentralization and Local Governance funding to Ukraine; and member Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund Review. Ann is currently a member of the American Planning Association Sustaining Places Task Force.
Ann has a Doctorate in City Planning and Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia. She is an Adjunct Professor at UBC teaching Strategic Planning, has served on the UBC Senate, and been a Visiting Professor at Queens University Canada and the Technical University of Sydney Australia. Community contributions include Chairing the Board of Trustees of Vancouver General Hospital and President of the UBC Alumni Association.
Ann is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and has been recognized by Lambda Alpha International (Honorary Land Economics Society), International Downtown Association, Urban Development Institute, and the Canadian Housing Design Council for her contributions to affordable housing, strategic planning, and innovative public processes. In 2007, Ann received the Kevin Lynch Award for Distinguished Planning Practice from MIT.
